Forging and stealing great art has been around for a long time. Anthony Amore is the head of security and chief investigator at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, where paintings by Vermeer, Rembrandt and Manet, among others were stolen in 1990. In his book, The Art of the Con: The Most Notorious Fakes, Frauds, and Forgeries in the Art World, he writes about the rampant counterfeiting in the art world.
This is a big business in the notoriously secretive art works with even well known collectors and dealers falling victim to various art cons. Steve Martin, has said that he's been duped before and will probably be duped again in the art world.
