Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei has taken traditional kite-making techniques and created mythological creatures for the Paris department store, Le Bon Marche.
The larger than life installation is titled "Er Xi" or "Child's Play" and is made from stretching silk or paper over bamboo frames. Lights are installed within the bamboo structures to illuminate the characters like lanterns.
"This exhibition speaks to our inner child... Introducing the fantastic within a retail space strikes the imagination of customers, visitors and passersby," said Ai. He continues to say, "These characters are technical feats... at the same time, it's a very simple handicraft. Anyone can make a kite."
The characters are taken from Shan Hai Jing, which is a collection of tales told to Children dating back over 2,000 years.
