tom thomson, untitled, oil on plywood, 8 1/8" x 10 7/8", c. 1915

Tonight at maynards auction house in Vancouver, a tom thomson will go up for auction. with an estimate between $150,000 and $250,000, Kate bellringer, the director of contemporary and canadian art at maynards, suspects it will go for much more.

an unknown consigner brought in the sketch he claims to have found at a garage sale, along with another painting by frederick horsman varley.

bellringer, states that experts (who have not yet been named) across canada have confirmed its authenticity, but as we've seen before at auctions, even the smallest doubt can have everyone sitting on their hands when the time comes to make a bid.

galleries in vancouver, as well as maynards have been fielding numerous calls weekly regarding possible hidden treasures.

is this all too good to be true, or will be all begin to spend our weekends at local garage sales?
