Over the past two weeks I have visited both the frieze and fiac art fairs and for those of you participating in Art Toronto, I've learned to secret to attracting tons of people to your booth - so listen up. It's quite simple actually and works every single time. Install a crazy and outrageous sculpture, even if you don't think you'll sell it.

Seriously.

Art fairs are full of people who are not there to buy, but rather to take in the sights. These range from artists looking for inspiration to casual art goers. Tons of these fair hoppers will be armed with cameras and smartphones, ready to snap at anything that captivates them. Display an eye-catching sculpture and watch them flock to you. Next, see how quickly they upload these shots to facebook, twitter, flickr, theartmarket.ca or some other social media network. I'm telling you, it's great advertising!

In addition, fair goers have a tendency to act like lemmings (something of which I am also guilty of). ARt fairs are so overwhelming and can be difficult to navigate. We feel like we don't want to miss a thing, so when people huddle around a piece of art and cram into a booth then we simply must do the same!

Are most of these people serious art collectors? Probably not. Are some of them? Definitely. You can't lose.

Don't believe me? Just visit Art Toronto Oct 28 - Nov. 1 and see for yourself!
