the art market

Last night Concrete Contemporary Auctions and Projects held their second annual auction of Contemporary Canadian art in Toronto in what proved to be a relatively upbeat evening. Created in 2012 as a division of Waddington’s and spearheaded by Stephen Ranger, Concrete is the first commercial auction with entirely Contemporary Canadian art and is an important step for the local art market. The crowd of...

We've reached the end of yet another auction season and there were a few surprises to say the least. As usual, Heffel's auction was the biggest success this time around with total sales of $11,502,270.00, including the 17% buyer's premium. This is right at the high end of their pre-sale estimate. Last night, members and visitors to the Art Gallery of Ontario flooded into the auditorium for the sold out talk on Picasso and the Art Market, presented in partnership with Sotheby's Canada. Molly Ott Ambler, Director of Day Sales, and Elizabeth Gorayeb, Vice President, flew up from Sotheby's, New York, to share with us Canadians a bit about the history of Picasso in the art market, how his prices were realized, why he...

Have you ever wondered how much the art in your home is worth? Have you found something at a yard sale that you could swear is worth more than the $30 you paid for it? Or, have you considered that your house insurance may not be enough to cover the insurance of your art collection? If so, what is your next step? Where do you go to have your art appraised?

Appraising art is one of those things that people often overlook. You would...
