Prices at Sotheby’s London soared with a thin sale

In a convincing demonstration that there is no limit to the bullishness of art buyers, Sotheby’s managed to extract from a packed room here a huge £112.1 million with a surprisingly thin sale.

More remarkable still, three world auction records were set for famous artists represented by paintings that could hardly be described as their ultimate masterpieces.
