I was born in 1981 and grew up in Surrey, BC, across the Fraser River, a 39 minute train ride from Vancouver. Surrey is the classic suburb: highways and sprawl, rows of matching houses, and a growing population that lives on the numbered streets, but works in the city. Vancouver looked like New York when I was 15. Now it looks like Vancouver.
I attended the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser, and Emily Carr, but I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts from Kwantlen Polytechnic University. An early reader, but perpetual underachiever, I loved, from a young age, to tell stories and draw pictures and explore the city by myself. First, I crossed the street to spend my allowance on candy at the corner store. Then I crossed the bridge to see the music and art of downtown. After high school, I crossed the country by bus. Despite spending the year I turned 30 in Halifax, I have always called BC home. Even away, Vancouver is the place I find in my art.
Once upon a time, I was going to be a writer. I still love to make sentences and paragraphs, but today, my art includes photographs and illustration, too. I’ve been posting online since 2002. My native art form might just be the blog post. The internet is one more bridge to cross to find the city on the other side.
"The Art Market is a wonderful way of showcasing Winsor Gallery artists in the company of the best galleries, art institutions and fellow artists across Canada. I especially enjoyed the intuitive and visually-appealing design. Bravo Kate and Merete!"
