Artist Statement: My practice is oil painting, specifically portraiture, and I explore the artifice in representations of singular and collective memories in regards to their portrayal in popular culture. I use familiar imagery to engage viewers with their personal experiences, evoking a common memory; questioning their understanding of their own and others shared concepts of nostalgia. I am interested in examining society's visualization and understanding of memories and histories through images, including ideas of nostalgia, and the creation of a hyper-reality, wherein accepting the simulation as authentic; the belief in the fake supersedes the notion of the real in importance. Constructed images of vaguely familiar,
hypothetical pasts are created and the works pass as re-presentations of people and events, questioning the validity of memory, history and the freedoms taken in their recreation.
